A View of the Cosmos
A stay at the Crestone Hideaway brings you closer to life in the most spiritual place on Earth. We are an off-beat couple with an off-beat house that is available for your stay in the San Luis Valley.

A passion for the environment
The Fabulous Crestone Hideaway (our home) is a quirky and interesting hand-built home constructed from adobe and stucco and traditional framing.
We are “off-grid” which does not mean unplugged. We have a full solar array and high-speed internet. We simply choose to stay off the public utilities grid.
Not only are we off-grid, but we are off-beat too!
What about our off-beat home?
The Crestone Hideaway is literally hidden in the desert. The house is barely visible from the road with a very low profile!
When you stay at the Hideaway, you will enjoy:
- Two bedrooms that can comfortably sleep up to five. There is also a pull-out sofa for one person in the living room.
- Fully equipped kitchen.
- Dining room that can seat up to about 8 people with the table leaves inserted.
- Full bathroom with a bathtub/shower.
- Vast south-facing Deck. Patio table and chairs allow for a lovely evening meal – after you’ve made your dinner on the adjacent BBQ grill.
- Indoor decor features: Wavy walls, saltillo tile floors, tree stumps, and boulders.
- Incredible vistas in every direction, including two 14-ers.
- A peaceful environment that lets you shut out the rest of the world.

Who Are We?

We are Gail and Michael. We’ve lived in Colorado for all / most of our lives. We take traveling and adventuring very seriously. The process of making our house a retreat was truly an adventure.
We rescued the Crestone Hideaway after it had been abandoned for a while. The house had broken windows, a very leaky roof, no electricity, no floors, and was home to 4-dumpster-loads of trash and junk.
We hope you love our home as much as we do.
What is Special About Our World?
Renovation and Restoration
Experience the fusion of imagination and expertise with our life in the desert. It is quiet and tranquil in our part of the world.

Continuous Support
We have the services of an on-site manager that assists with everything you might need. She is within throwing distance of our home.
Full Access
You have full access to the entire world, our home, and our property the DNR Ranch, except for our private quarters.

Life in the Desert
Most of the San Luis Valley offers the “lights out” lifestyle. We are part of the International Dark Sky designation and keep our outdoor lights off.
There is very little annual rainfall in the Valley. The desert is a fragile environment and expect all to have respect for this fact.
It is also a highly flammable environment. When visiting the Hideaway (and all of the area) please abide by all fire bans!

See the Sights
From the deck at the Hideaway, you can see the Great Sand Dunes and the world famous Ziggurat (more info about the Ziggurat here).
The Dunes are located at the end of a simple and beautiful drive through Saguache County. The Ziggurat is close to our home and offers a wonderful hike. It provides an even better view of the San Luis Valley in every direction.
Spiritual Grounding
There are more religious retreat centers and religious organizations concentrated around Crestone than practically anywhere else in the universe.
Feel free to visit the stupas and temples. They are beautiful and exquisitely inspiring.
We are happy to assist you in setting up a private tour(s). Advanced notification is kindly requested.

The views from the Hideaway!

The town of Crestone
- A village of thought-provoking characters.
- 2 public parks play host to festivals on most weekends.
- 3 restaurants, a gas station, US Post Office, a liquor store, history museum, art cooperative, traffic jams caused by herds of deer, and no stop lights.
- Exclusive access to friendly happy people.
An Array of Options
Besides the village of Crestone, the San Luis Valley offers a tremendous list of activities. You will find your groove here!
Please check out these highlights:

- The Great Sand Dunes National Park (~40 minutes drive from our home). We LOVE the Dunes and spend as much time as possible exploring. For much of the spring and summer months, the mysterious Medano Creek runs at the base of the dunes which is within a few short yards of the parking area.
- Hiking the Zapata Falls trail and being amazed at the beauty.
- The Colorado Gators (Alligator Farm) is an amazing menagerie of reptiles and other more exotic creatures. They serve as a rescue center for reptiles needing to be re-homed across the U.S. They are licensed and inspected regularly by the State of Colorado.
- The UFO Watch Tower. This is the epitome of a tourist trap. Go. You will find your funny bone as soon as you get out of your car. Do not miss it.
- Three local Hot Springs locations. The Sand Dunes Pool & Rec Center is a family-friendly hot springs that also offers an adults-only area serving adult drinks. Note: They are closed on Thursdays. The Joyful Journey hot springs is a smaller spa that also offers hotel rooms and camping (check out their yurts). The Valley View Hot Springs is a clothing optional naturist environment. Definitely worth visiting.
- Horse-back riding at our local Baca Grande Stables.
- Tour the local spiritual centers. We can arrange your own personal guide while you’re staying at the Hideaway. Please let us know in advance about your wishes to tour.
- Sitting on the deck to watch the magnificent sunsets and night sky. The Milky Way is easily visible all summer.
- And many many more activities, sites, and experiences that we can recommend and facilitate for you.
